After our soccer morning from hell, we decided to go shopping. Yes, it was only Walmart, but it still made me feel better.
We head for the center aisle to avoid the toys. They always want to look at the toys. We don't buy them any, but it still is a 30 minute process of looking. But, now the center aisle is filled with Halloween stuff. Crap. Next time I'm heading straight for produce.
I've learned a few things with kids and Halloween costumes. You have two choices, buy early or late. They both have their own set of perks.
If you buy early, you get your pick of best costumes and sizes.
Buy late, and your kid won't have time to change their mind like Ben did last year. Emily was Dorothy and Ben was the wicked witch. Until Halloween Eve, when Ben decided he didn't want to be a witch and wanted to be a superhero.
We browsed the costumes. Ben wanted to be Batman, but the Batman costume was no where near as cool as the one my Dad and Suzy had just bought him. So, we convinced him to be Buzz Lightyear. What I have now is one costume for Halloween and one back up just in case.
Emily picked out Thumbelina which is Barbie's cousin with wings. The costume is super cute.
We get them home and David is a bit miffed at me for letting the kids try them on before the big night. True, they will probably be hanging by a thread come Halloween, but why save them just for one night? Come to find out, Emily's was hanging by a thread within about 5 minutes. The velcro came unglued in the back, so it no longer held together. And two of the cute green ribbons on the shoulder just fell off. I was going to sew it and safety pin the back, but the costume was $20. It should last for more than 5 minutes. We are taking it back and buying a better quality Thumbelina from Costco.
Sometimes, it's helpful to break the rules and prevent a wardrobe malfunction on Halloween night!
P.S. While Emily is at school Ben dresses up like Buzz Lightyear, makes me call him Buzz and watches Toy Story three times. Don't tell David!

Love the costumes! Don't forget to hit Walmart's clearance row after Halloween for all the mark downs. My grandkids have a huge supply of costumes that they use for dress-ups all year long. I'm sure Ben would love to be a super hero everyday! :) Kathi
So true. :) And then there's my Sarah who declared a few years ago that she was too big for trick-or-treating and would just stay home and hand out candy to the little kids and yet... she's gone out trick or treating every year and she and her friends are already planning what they're going to be for this year. Will this continue on into High School??? I'm not going to stop her. Hey, we're still dressing up - heading to our friend's annual party.
